Retiring PlayStation Boss Gifted a PS1 Style PlayStation 5
CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, has recently become the proud owner of a truly one-of-a-kind PS5, styled after the iconic original PlayStation. Unveiled by Yuichi Haga, the vertical lead of the PlayStation Employee Network, on X/Twitter, this special PS5 stands as a fitting tribute to its great, great grandfather.
PlayStation went all out for this unique console. Embracing the classic PlayStation two-tone grey colors, the DualSense controller accompanying it is crafted to match, adorned with the original red, yellow, blue, and green PlayStation buttons, as well as colored action buttons.
But the homage doesn’t end there. A special USB-C cable, reminiscent of the classic DualShock controller’s cable, features a thick grey input on one end, reminiscent of the era it hails from. Sony even went the extra mile by designing a distinct PlayStation 5 box for Ryan’s console, discarding the modern aesthetic for a nostalgic old-school design.
This console is truly a gem, and much to the chagrin of PlayStation enthusiasts, it’s not available for purchase anywhere. Fans have taken to social media, fervently pleading with Sony to officially release this special edition. It draws parallels to the limited edition 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4 consoles that Sony introduced in 2014 to celebrate two decades of PlayStation. Those consoles, though in limited quantities, were available for purchase, and while Sony hasn’t officially hinted at a PS5 equivalent, the 30th anniversary looms on the horizon in 2024. Who knows what surprises Sony might have in store for the next milestone?
Sad I won’t be around for #TheGameAwards but I couldn’t pass up the chance to go to Jim Ryan’s thank you party and be around some legends and this one of a kind “Jim Ryan” PS5 with PS1 style. pic.twitter.com/WP7qwtxDI0
