The Malaysian University English Language Test or better known by its abbreviation (MUET) was first introduced into the education system in Malaysia in 1999 and this exam is administered by the Malaysian Examination Council or Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia (MPM).

Introduction to MUET

MUET, or Malaysian University English Test, is an English language proficiency test required by the Malaysian Ministry of Education (KPM) for all candidates who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a public higher education institution (IPTA).

For admission to a Bachelor’s Degree program at IPTA, most programs require candidates to achieve at least Band 3.0 to Band 4.0.

Although, some important programs such as Medicine, Law, or TESL may set higher requirements, for example Band 4.5 or Band 5.0.

Latest Format of MUET 2026

The latest MUET format (introduced in 2021) is designed to align English language tests in Malaysia with global standards, namely the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

The MUET test is divided into four papers with equal marks weightage (25% each):

Paper 800/1: Listening

  • Number of Questions: 30 objective questions.
  • Number of Parts: 5 parts (Various text types, including dialogue and monologue).
  • Implementation Method: Audio will be played as much as possible TWO (2) times. Candidates are required to transfer the answers to the OMR form.
  • Exam Focus: Test the candidate’s understanding of specific information, purpose, linguistic function and inference.

Paper 800/2: Speaking

This component is the only one tested face-to-face (or online) and is usually held on a separate date from the three written components.

  • Number of Tasks: 2 assignments (Individual Assignment and Group Discussion).
  • Assignment A: Individual Presentation (2 minutes preparation + 2 minutes presentation).
    • Candidates will be given a topic and brief preparation time (speaking in monologue).
  • Assignment B: Group Discussion (3 minutes preparation + 8 to 12 minutes discussion).
    • Four (or three) candidates will interact and discuss to find solutions or reach agreement on a given topic.
  • Exam Focus: Test fluency, interaction, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and ability to support arguments.

Paper 800/3: Reading

  • Number of Questions: 40 objective questions.
  • Number of Parts: 7 sections consist of 10 sections of text of various types (academic, general, and technical).
  • Question Type: Multiple choice questions that test written and implied understanding (inference).
  • Exam Focus: Tests overall understanding, detailed information, conclusions, and relationships between ideas in a text.

Exam Focus: Write a complete essay on a specific current issue topic, testing your ability to present an argument, support it with evidence, and draw a strong conclusion.

Number of Tasks: 2 tasks.

Task 1: Response to stimulus (Short Report or Email).

  • Condition: At least 100 words.
  • Recommended Time: ±25 minutes.
  • Exam Focus: Write a reply email/letter based on remind or notes provided.

Task 2: Argumentative Essay/Opinion.

  • Condition: At least 250 words.
  • Recommended Time: ±50 minutes.

The MUET scoring system uses the aggregate (overall) scores of the four test components (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing) to determine the Group of candidates.

The system is aligned with the international standards of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

MUET Pay Rates

The costs for taking the 2026 MUET test are as follows:

Payment of registration fees to take the MUET test for individual private candidates can only be done online, namely via the following link:

The MEC PIN cannot be purchased and used by individual private candidates for registration purposes.

Payment of Prospective School/Institution Registration Fees

I. Payment of registration fees to take the MUET test for prospective schools/institutions is by purchasing a MEC PIN.

I. MEC PINs can be purchased in the following ways.

A. Purchases in large quantities by the Exam Secretary/MUET Coordinator of the school/institution at the Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) counter only.
B. Purchases made by prospective schools/institutions themselves via internet banking via the MEC link and PIN must be submitted to the Examination Secretary/MUET Coordinator at the respective schools/institutions for online registration.
Use: An additional fee will be charged for each purchase of a MEC PIN number (depending on the banking institution).
C. Payment for the MEC PIN purchase is made by the prospective school/institution will not be returned if candidate failed to register on a predetermined date and cannot be used again for registration for the next MUET session.

Payments that have been made will be displayed MUET Registration Statement for candidate reference.

Terms & Validity Period of MUET Certificate

There are no special eligibility requirements to take the MUET test. It is open to all candidates regardless of age or student status.

The validity period of the MUET certificate depends on the date the decision was issued.

The MUET results were issued before 2009, the validity period is until 18 July 2013, while the MUET results were issued from 2009, the validity period is five years starting from the date the test results are issued.

MUET Certificates are now issued in the form of e-Certificates via the official MPM portal (and can only be downloaded for exams taken within the last 5 years.​​

Applications for MUET certificates more than 5 years ago need to be made specifically via the MUET/S2 form on the MPM portal.​

If your MUET certificate has expired, you will need to retake the MUET to get a valid result.
