Universal Studios Japan has unveiled exciting details about the upcoming Donkey Kong Country area, slated to debut at the Osaka version of Super Nintendo World in spring 2024. This Nintendo-themed haven first graced USJ in March 2021, and the Donkey Kong expansion was recently unveiled at a press conference attended by IGN Japan.
The centerpiece of this new section is the thrilling Donkey Kong’s Crazy Cart rollercoaster, which takes riders on a wild journey through a towering temple nestled in the heart of the jungle. Drawing inspiration from Donkey Kong Country Returns, participants embark on a mission to safeguard the coveted Golden Banana from the mischievous Tiki Tak Tribe.
As the rollercoaster adventure concludes, visitors find themselves face-to-face with the formidable Tiki Tong, the ultimate boss from Donkey Kong Country Returns. Beyond this exhilarating ride, the Donkey Kong Country area boasts a myriad of activities developed in collaboration with the legendary Donkey Kong creator, Shigeru Miyamoto.
One such activity allows visitors to collect the iconic K O N G letters, akin to the ones players gather in the video games to earn extra lives. To partake in this adventure, visitors will need a Power-Up Band, and a new set based on Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong will join the existing lineup at Super Nintendo World. By linking the Power-Up Band to the official USJ mobile app, enthusiasts can track their collection progress.
Leading up to the grand opening in spring, USJ will tantalize fans with a new selection of Donkey Kong-themed merchandise available for purchase starting December 6. Among the highlights are DK Barrels transformed into containers of delectable confectioneries, doubling as charming piggy banks. Additionally, Banana Coin motifs grace a package of coin-shaped chocolates.
This expansion not only promises a surge of excitement but also enlarges the total area of Super Nintendo World at USJ by 1.7 times. Donkey Kong’s Crazy Cart stands as the area’s inaugural rollercoaster-type ride, following the widely acclaimed Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge AR ride and the family-friendly Yoshi’s Adventure ride.
Super Nintendo World has received rave reviews, earning a stellar 9/10 from IGN. The park is lauded for brilliantly reinventing and gamifying the theme park experience, providing unparalleled immersion and, most importantly, sheer fun.
