What are SMART Lanes?

SMART LANE is the activation of the leftmost lane on the PLUS Toll Road on several critical lanes on the toll road which aims to increase lane capacity on the toll road, especially on the lanes involved and is implemented to disperse traffic flow to reduce congestion.

It was first introduced in 2019 on the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) and is now being expanded to other locations along the PLUS expressway.

This system does not just open emergency routes randomly. This involves careful planning and continuous monitoring to ensure the safety of road users. SMART lines are activated in strategic locations identified as areas that often experience critical congestion.

Starting this year, PLUS Malaysia Berhad has expanded the use of SMART Lane to more locations, demonstrating the effectiveness of this system.

According to a study conducted by the Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute (MIROS), more than 70% of road users who have used SMART lanes agree that the system is effective in reducing congestion.

However, using this route requires cooperation and awareness from all road users.

There have been several incidents where drivers who were not aware of this system reprimanded or interfered with vehicles using the SMART lane.

Let’s take a look at the infographic below:

PLUS is still actively sharing about this route to increase awareness and understanding of this system.

Repair

Improvements implemented on the Smart Lane route include mobile electronic signage (MPVMS) which is placed at the beginning of the SMART Lane route.

The start sign will be equipped with a green flashing light (Green Flashing Light) as a sign that the Smart Lane route is active and can be used at a certain location.

Apart from that, PLUS also added warning signs at 500 meter intervals until the end of the route at identified Smart Lane locations.

Sempenya Smart Lane Activation Time

Coinciding with the upcoming Chinese New Year 2026, PLUS Malaysia Berhad will be active 32 locations Smart Lane along the PLUS Expressway as one of the initiatives to disperse traffic and increase lane capacity on toll roads.

Apart from that, PLUS also adds 26 toilet cabin units at selected side stops and toll plazas as well as Smart Lane activation in 32 traffic hotspots to facilitate movement this festive season.

Not only that, around 6,000 highway officers are also on standby to ensure users’ journeys are safer, smoother and more comfortable throughout the festive season.

Users are advised to always be careful when driving when using the SMART lane to ensure safe and smooth travel.

How to Use SMART Lane

The use of SMART lanes requires compliance with several basic guidelines, namely:

1. Pay attention to the signage

SMART Lane is marked with a large yellow sign. You will see a “SMART Lane Start” sign at the beginning and a “SMART Lane End” sign at the end. Along the route, warning signs are installed every 500 meters.

2. Wait for the activation signal

PLUS has added a flashing green light every 1 kilometer to indicate that SMART Lane has been activated.

3. Enter carefully

Before entering SMART Lane, signal early and change lanes carefully.

4. Drive safely

When on this route, drive at an appropriate speed (60km/h) and always be aware of the surrounding conditions. Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

5. Be careful with wide vehicles

Because this route uses the existing emergency route, it may be quite narrow. Watch out for large vehicles in adjacent lanes.

6. Exit at the end

When you see the “SMART Lane End” sign, be prepared to exit the lane. Gives the initial signal to move to the slow lane.

USE:

  • Use only during traffic jams: These SMART lanes are intended to be used during traffic jams. If the road is not congested, it is better to use the normal route.
  • Please note that use of this route is only permitted at the locations and operating hours announced by PLUS
