With a reputation as one of the most prestigious and intense events in every edition, this year saw great competition in three main categories: singles, doubles and team.

Introduction to Badminton SEA Games 2025

Badminton is a sport that has a long foundation and evolution. Starting from the activity of hitting a ball with feathers attached to it (the beginning of the shuttlecock) with a response using hands or a racket.

This sport then developed into one of the most popular sports for all ages and genders, with competitions held widely internationally and in the Southeast Asia region.

Thailand, as host of the 2025 SEA Games, founded the Badminton Association of Thailand in 1950.

The association is officially recognized by the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) and is a fully registered national badminton body, as well as being a full member of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC) and the National Olympic Committee of Thailand.

For the SEA Games, badminton is one of 12 sports that have been contested since the first edition which was originally called the SEAP Games in 1959.

For the upcoming 33rd SEA Games, the badminton event will take place in the Pathum Thani area which is part of the Bangkok Metropolitan Area.

Competitive Events

The 2025 SEA Games badminton will include 3 categories, namely:

1. Individual
2. Double
3. Cooperate.

Competition Regulations and Laws

• Players are divided into two sides. Each side must hit the shuttlecock over the net and land on the opponent’s court. If successful, they get one point.
• System Meeting point used to determine win/loss, meaning each badminton exchange will result in one point going to one side. If either side reaches 21 points first, they win the set.
• Matches are played in a best of three format. The team that wins the first two sets is the winner of the match.
• If the score is tied 20 : 20 in any set, a special rule applies: the side must lead by 2 points to win the set.
• If the score reaches 29 : 29 in any set, the side that scores the 30th point first will win the set.
