This competition is organized by the Malaysian Football League (MFL) in collaboration with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

The 2025-26 season begins on February 6, 2026 and will conclude with two finals on April 4, 2026 and April 18, 2026, promising fierce competition between the competing teams.

MFL Challenge Cup background

This tournament was created for Malaysian Super League and Malaysian Premier League teams who did not qualify for the Malaysia Cup tournament through their league position at the end of the league season.

The idea of ​​holding this tournament was initiated by Football Malaysia in December 2017 as a solution to the inactivity of teams that did not qualify for the more prestigious Malaysia Cup.

Hosting these tournaments is seen as another opportunity to win trophies for competing teams, maintain a competitive advantage among participating teams, and as a way to analyze the players on their teams in preparation for next season.

List of Competing Teams

The 2025-26 MFL Challenge Cup will involve a total of eight teams and these teams consist of teams that did not qualify for the Malaysia Cup Quarter Finals.

Teams eligible for the 2025-26 MFL Challenge Cup are:

• Sabah
• PDRM
• Silver FA
• Kelantan TRW
• UM-Damansara
• Penang Island
• Immigration
• Kelantan Red Soldiers

The match starts in the quarter-finals with a two-legged format (home and away). Each team will play one game at home and one game at home to determine the winner.

First Quarter Final Results

The quarter-final matches will take place on 6 – 8 February 2026 (first match) and 13 – 16 February 2026 (second match).

• Selangor beat Negeri Sembilan 1-0
• Sabah beat PDRM 2-0
• Kelantan Red Warrior drew 0-0 with Penang
• Kelantan TRW beat Immigration FC 2-1
• Perak beat UM-Damansara 1-0

Match Format

For the 2025-26 edition, the MFL Challenge Cup competition format involves selecting teams based on criteria set by the organisers, including position in the domestic league as well as performance in major tournaments such as the Malaysia Cup.

This approach ensures that only truly competitive and worthy teams are given the opportunity to compete in this competition.

The tournament typically features eight teams that will begin competition in the knockout stages.

Starting from the quarter-finals to the final, each match is played back-to-back (two legs), namely one match at home and another at the opponent’s home ground.

This two-game format gives each team a more balanced opportunity to plan strategy, take advantage of play on their own court, and prove their true abilities before moving on to the next level.
