The government has never offered free laptops via the Telegram platform. The public is advised to be wary of any messages or links claiming to offer such assistance.
Applications for any government assistance can only be made through authorized official sites, namely portals with links ending in “.gov.my”. Avoid filling in personal information on unverified sites to avoid fraud.
For this case, the MyCheck review found:
- The URL to the “government help portal” is too long and does not end with an official government domain
- The targets of the assistance provided are too general and indicate a tactic to deceive as many victims as possible
- The portal only asks for the full name and telephone number used for the Telegram account
- This fake computer-assisted tactic was used by scammers in 2023 using a similar modus operandi, and was reported by MyCheck.
